Q. I'm thinking of redoing my family room, and don't quite know what to do. There's a maroon red brick fireplace, a light redwood bookcase & the right wall has white shutter windows. It's a medium-sized room, about 20x20 ft. around I want to take out the rest of the furniture and repaint the walls. Any ideas for the wall colour and colour of furniture?

A. Change the room to having neutral light colours. Not only does light colours make a room seem more spacious, they give a feeling of airyness and freedom. I'd paint your walls a nice ivory or cream colour. A vase of colourful flowers on the dining table adds a pop of colour, and so does artwork and cushions. It's amazing how much of a difference those things can make to a neutral colour scheme. Q. Ballpark range. We basically want to tear down our sunroom, which we hardly ever use, and make it a den or something we can use year round, which means putting a heating source in there; how I don't know. My husband thinks it can't be done to where it is a warm room in the winter, where I say people put "additions" on their house all the time and it works! He thinks it will cost an outragous amount of money, where I say it's only a 10x10 room and shouldn't cost as much as he thinks. How much can a little room cost? My guess is around $10K?

A. My in laws did this, and it is not very expensive at all depending on the sunroom. If you have to tear down the sunroom and start over, then it can get pricey fast ($10,000 might be low) but if you can use the existing sun room as a start (like my inlaws) then it can be VERY economical. They converted their screened in porch (about 15 x 30) into a year round dining room and the cost was under $10,000. As to heating, you don't have to do much, if you leave the doors into it open and install a good quality small heater it will work on a budget. I do all my work like this myself, so I don't know about labor costs, but my guess in materials $1000 - $2000 should be plenty unless you go overboard.

Q. There is a local contractor who says they do kitchens, baths, windows, room additions, family rooms, siding, renovations, and remodeling. They told me they could build a house from the ground up but Im wondering if I should trust them to do the job (they will be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than a big time builder) or does this seem like a bad idea?

Q. My family would like to add on to our exsisting 1200 square foot traditional rancher. We'd like to add on a 2 car garage, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, family room and knock out a exsisting wall in the kitchen, we are having are electricity done for free and i would greatly appreciate what the approximate cost would be and how can i save money with an addition like this?

A. You have to figure in alot of things - will it have a foundation ( basement) or slab ( for the concrete)? Plumbing will need to be run for the bathroom- the further away from the main lines ( drains and water) more itll cost) . You'll have to figure in for wall studs- roof rafters, sheetrock , insulation , nails/screws, roofing materials ( shingles,tar paper, gutters), flooring, siding , finishing materials ( vynal or tile finish floors, paint , decorating , lighting, doors ,mouldings, windows), demolition ( for the removal of the wall) , a dumpster ( for waste materials) . Rough guess - Id say $50,000 - over $100,000 easy and always make it higher for unexpected changes - so top end will probably be an easy $200, 000. Will there be a company doing all the work? Are permits included in the bid? You almost have to figure if its cheeper to locate a larger house then add on to the exisitng one ( unless theres a ton of property). Its a big expense.

Q. Say that I moved all of the furniture out of the two rooms I wanted the floor installed in. About how much would it be to install hardwood floors in a small dining room and new carpet in a small family room? Do not include labor. Would it be less if we bought the hard wood flooring and carpet instead of them bringing their own? Thanks in advance. :)

A. True hardwood flooring (the kind you nail down, sand, stain and varnish) will run $10+ per square foot. It might or might not be cheaper to supply your own materials--an installer might get a better discount than you. Carpet should run $20 to $40 per square yard--that's 9 square feet. Again, just ask your installer if buying your own materials will save you any money. Maybe it will, maybe it won't!

Q. I contracted a so called 'professional' to put laminated flooring in my house. Now, the noise is still here and there is a lot of parts where is moving up and down. It is really bad. The cowboy who did the work disappeared. Is it possible to get this repaired or do I have to change the whole flooring again? The situation is only getting worse, I have to say.

A. I checked with the master craftsman who has done floors in my house and in other family members and friends houses. He suggested that you remove the shoe molding around the wall and see if the laminate floor is too tight up against the wall, which cause it to pinch and raise when it should expand and float. If it is too tight, the planks nearest the wall can be trimmed to give the floor room to expand when the temperature changes. If that attempt to repair it doesn't work the floor might have to be replaced. But I would check with the flooring people at the nearest Lowe's or Home Depot, or possibly at a local flooring store that has been in business in your city for a long time and has a good reputation. Q. Ok...I ripped the carpet out in my family room and put down glueless laminate snap together wood flooring. Now i want to put it in the kitchen and hallway but i have two layers of flooring above the subloor....one linoleom with some serious adhesive underneath, and on top of that I have those stick down tiles ....together they are about an eighth of an inch thick....NOW heres my problem....It is nearly impossible to remove the linoleom....it would take me 3 days at least to get all of it off....would it be easier to take apart the family room....it isnt that big....and then put something down an eighth inch thick....and then just put the laminate over the existing tiles and linoleom? I have enough room under my doors to do it....what would i use that would be that thinn if so??? like masonite board?

A. That s one way to go about it. That is to use something thin. Its best to get the elbow grease and take up the old .. Barring that ,a "T" mold which you ll need any way, may make the transition if not you ll have to use a reducer.. You ll need break in the laminate for expansion and contraction any way.
